What is IELTS?

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency across the globe. IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is the world’s most popular high stakes test of English language skills. IELTS tests are held in over 500 centres with tests up to four times a month. IELTS course respects international diversity and is fair to anyone who sits the test, regardless of nationality.

You can choose from two types of IELTS test: Academic or General Training, depending on whether you want to study, work or migrate. Both versions are made up of four parts – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IELTS results are graded on the unique IELTS 9-band scale.

To help you prepare, IELTS provides IELTS sample test and Official IELTS test practice Materials ( The test covers the full range of ability from non-user to expert user. You are not limited in how many times you can sit the test.

How is this test organised?

The test consists of four components – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Listening, Reading and Writing components are taken on test day. The Speaking component is taken separately, within seven days of test day. The written test (IELTS Listening, Reading and Writing) takes place within one day and lasts for approximately three hours.

The speaking test lasts for only 15 minutes and each candidate has his or her own speaking time. It can be arranged the same day or 2 days before the written test, depending on availability.
