1. What is IDP?
IDP is a non-government organisation owned by Australian
universities for the purpose of promoting Australia as a study
destination. We provide free service to assist students from the
time they step into our office, till the time they reach
Australia.
2. Which is the "best" university in Australia and which is
the most popular?
Different universities excel in different areas. Popularity of
the university depends on individual preferences and
perceptions.
3. Is there a ranking of Australian universities?
No. There is no official ranking of Australian universities.
4. Can IDP recommend universities?
This would depend on your qualifications, results and courses
you wish to apply, as each institution has different entry
requirements.
5. What is the difference between American, British and
Australian degrees?
American degrees tend to be more general, while British degrees
are more specialised. Australian degrees are a combination of
both.
6. Will the degree be recognised in Singapore?
All Australian degrees are established by an Act of the
Australian Parliament, which gives degrees from different
universities the same standing. Unless the course is a Professional
degree, there is no requirement for formal recognition by any
professional body. Professional degrees include Accountancy,
Architecture, Building, Dentistry, Engineering, Law, Medicine and
Pharmacy. The Public Service Commission, Singapore accepts only
Australian Government-funded Institutions reflected in the
Association of Commonwealth Universities Year Book. However, some
local government organisations have a preferred list of
universities which they accept.
7. How much advanced standing/credit exemptions will I
get?
For 'A' Level students, no exemptions will be granted. For
diploma holders, it will depend on the particular university and
the grades achieved in your diploma. On average, 1 to 2 years of
exemptions are given for engineering course & 0.5 to 1.5 years
for other courses.
8. How much does it cost to study in Australia?
Most courses cost between A$12,000 to A$14,000. Science and
Engineering courses are from A$15,000 to A$23,000. While Medicine
and Dentistry ranges from A$30,000 to A$33,000. Living expenses
range from A$800 to A$1,500 per month, depending on individual
lifestyles.
9. Is there a difference between distance learning and
studying in Australia?
Yes. There is a difference in availability of subjects and the
cost of the program. However, the university moderates the
standards of the course. Please check with prospective employers
for preferences.
10. How do I apply to study in Australia and when do I
start my course?
You must submit an application form for each institution with a
complete set of certified academic transcripts. Some universities
require an application fee. You can either pay by credit card or
get a bank draft from a bank, depending on the University. Please
check with our counsellors with regards to this. Certification is
free for students using IDP services. The Australian academic year
begins in either February or July. However, some courses are
available throughout the year. Students are encouraged to apply at
least 2 to 3 months in advance to provide ample time to process
student visa and to facilitate better planning.
